Who did we pick? ...
I want to tell a story first.
I met with three while I was over in Wellington in September and it was good to be able to sit down and talk to them. I didn't have a lot of questions for any of them because I had looked over their website and information packages rather extensively and I (perhaps naively) trust that they're the professionals, not me.
The best thing about meeting them all was the chance to have a conversation with them individually. A photographer is up there in the list of most important people to have around you on your wedding day. I've got my support posse in my Bridesmaids and I hope the Groomsmen are going to keep Grant entertained, calm and in check; soon I'll find someone to actually doing the marrying of us, and it'll be important that their personality works with ours; and then there's the person whose personality and skill will forever shape our memories of the day.
Yes, there will likely be 20+ digital cameras there (and we're kinda counting on that for the Party on the Saturday), and yes, I know there are going to be some great memories created from those photos. But we all know that the professionals are the pros for a reason. Theirs are the photos that we'll hang in our home, share with friends and family. It's their skill we're trusting in to make fun, meaningful and beautiful memories.
Interestingly, I hadn't placed as much importance on personality until I met Jason. He was the last of the three photographers I met, and finally the advice of picking someone you could chat to made sense.
This isn't to say the other two were mean or horrible. In fact, they were both lovely and very talented ladies. I'll admit they were also much more expensive, but we could have found the money for it if we really wanted.
But here was someone I felt comfortable talking to, almost straight away. I *love* that it's a husband and wife team, and that they got married at Erskine too. I like that they're trying for something a little bit different. I like that he took his shoes off when he came inside. I like that I found them through a friend (Jake). I like that I got to talk to him about their website and marketing strategies (I'm such a nerd).
Mostly, I like that when I described their photos to Grant, he knew exactly what I was talking about and agreed that they'd suit us. We're not the classically romantic couple who look beautiful, we're the silly couple making faces and stupid poses, and cracking jokes. And when they're "About me" photo has a cute little trick, I knew we'd work.
And so, with much happiness and excitement, I'm ecstatic to begin love-spamming about We Do Photography.
You've been warned... ;)
